Understanding of error messages

If you have questions about the problems in the preflight report of your PDF file then this guide helps you detect and solve the following problems:

If the problem cant be solved and you want to use incorrect material anyway, then let us also know.

PROBLEM NO 1:
Total ink coverage of flat CMYK color or image is larger than X%

EXPLANATION: Using unnecessary amounts of ink results the oversaturation of paper (Preflight Report Help). See also this note about size.

HOW TO CHECK: Check objects of exceeding ink with Acrobat Professional – Print Production – Output Preview – „Total Area Coverage: X%

HOW TO CHECK (ALTERNATIVE): List such objects with Acrobat Professional – Print Production – Preflight – „List objects using high TAC (upload this preflight profile for Acrobat 8 or above.)

Please note that this is made for test purpose and know that this may not working at all circumstances. If it is not working then use the first check option.

SOLUTION: Objects: reduce the total ink coverage of the four CMYK inks to less than the maximum percentage mentioned in the preflight report, in your design program, by lowering the individual Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black ink values. Images: convert image to larger color space (RGB or Lab) and re-separate it with proper CMYK color profile. Make sure the result is visually the same as the original. Then re-create the PDF file.

PROBLEM NO 4:
Rich-black text is used

EXPLANATION: Small text occuring on several color separations (plates) can have limited readability due to possible color misalign (Preflight Report Help).

PROBLEM: Multiple page PDF file

When PDF file has multiple pages and only one page has error then all PDF file is "stopped" (i.e. shows yellow icon in Apogee). This is because Apogee is not able to report errors by pages in case of multi-page PDF file. Therefore it is a bit difficult to examine problem places. Note, that the page numbers in the preflight report are page number in PDF file and therefore these may be different when compared to the publication page numbers.

SOLUTION: Split the file in Acrobat Professional – Document – „Extract pages (or use „Page Export Utility“).
